Hamsun praised the German dictator as a \"warrior for humankind and a preacher of the gospel of justice for all nations\" and \"a first-rate reformatory figure\" who had had the misfortune to work \"in a time characterised by unparalleled brutality, which eventually overthrew him\". Hamsun's conclusion underscores these opinions with its blind loyalty: \"This is how the average Western European looks at Adolf Hitler. However, this designation is somewhat problematic and is only partly correct. It is difficult to find arguments to support the claim that all Hamsun\u2019s works are modernist. Aesthetically speaking, most of the novels he wrote in the 20th century are realist literature. There is, however, little doubt that some of his earlier works are groundbreaking modernist texts. This particularly applies to Hunger and Mysteries, and to some extent also to Pan and Victoria.
