Childhood
Knut Pedersen is born into a poor family in Gudbrandsdal on the 4th of August 1859. Aged two and a half, he and his family move to Nordland where he grows up on a small farm at Hamsund on Hamarøy.
After years of hard work at his uncle's home in the village rectory, and with only 252 days of schooling, he becomes, through "self-education and his exceptional abilities", perhaps Norway’s greatest writer of prose.
