Articles 1889–1928

1939

«The place you come from is always lovely, it’s patriotism on a small scale, the feeling of home.»

The collection Articles 1889–1928 (1939) was published to mark Hamsun’s 80th birthday.

It is a selection of fifteen articles and essays made by Professor Francis Bull. The selection was approved by Hamsun, and today the book is accorded full status among Hamsun’s works.

Bull’s selection can be divided into two categories. There are articles on literature, such as the speech on the occasion of Wergeland’s centenary (1908) and the famous essay "From the unknown life of the mind " (1889). And there are a number of articles and essays on what one might term the theme of nation building, the most familiar being "A Word to Us" (1910) and "Festina lente" (1928).
